| Unlike the Beijing Olympics, which have attracted the world's attention, Chinese stocks have failed to compel, trending downward for three straight sessions since the spectacle kicked off last Friday. The Shanghai Composite Index dropped more than 2.5% in the morning on sagging turnover. Strengthening large caps lifted the afternoon session from an intraday low of 2,370.74. Shanghai's key index dropped 10.90 points, or 0.44%, to close at 2,446.30. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange gained 56.84 points, or 0.69%, to limp home at 8,249.64. The non-ferrous metals sector led the session's dead-cat bounce. Despite a further retreat in crude futures overnight, Shanghai Composite heavyweight PetroChina fell 0.79% to close at RMB 13.75, a slight bump from its all-time low of RMB 13.18. Sinopec and China Shenhua, the country's biggest refiner and coal miner, were the only Top 20 large-caps to gain any ground on the day. So-called "Olympic stocks" extended their slump, while brokerages ended their losing streak by launching something of a rally in the afternoon. |
